focus areas
environment

- Continuous sustainable improvements to the public safety of its residents and visitors.
- To maintain common garden areas, verges and gutters, island and stair throughfares, and municipal areas where council assistance is lacking.
- Removal of alien vegetation within SK and liaison with SANParks for removal of alien vegetation on the side of the mountain.
- Visibility and safety of roads within SK by liaising with residents or the council in respect of the removal of overgrown foliage on erfs or council land.
- Beautification of our common areas as evidenced by the beautifully crafted front garden.
fire management
The SK CID current focus is to:
- Provide and maintain firefighting equipment, hoses and connections to the hydrants and to arrange training for residents to use the equipment.
- Inform residents of locations of our 5 sets of firefighting equipment are located.
- Liaison with central fire department re firebreaks.
- Align with and sustain ongoing relationships with the local Simon’s Town Fire Station crew and involve them in our training and equipment checks.
- Ensure removal of overgrown and dead foliage on erfs that creates a fire risk.
safety and security
The systems in place to support our current objectives are:
- Surveillance camera and licence plate recognition (LPR) systems operates 24×7. Maintenance, servicing and updates are done by Mach1 Security. Monitoring of the surveillance cameras is by ISS on 12×7 basis, with LPR cameras monitored 24×7 by NAVIC.
- A dedicated ISS security patrol vehicle operates from 6pm to 6am, 365 days per annum.
- NAVIC system monitors and notifies SAPS, Mach1 and nominated SK Security Committee Members of any suspicious/flagged vehicles entering Simon’s Kloof.
- Surveillance and LPR camera synergy with neighbouring sector camera systems.
The SK camera project has been operational since Oct 2020. The success of the cameras is reflected in the crime statistics with FY2024 at zero.
To ensure continued coverage during loadshedding we have:
- Installed surge protectors for all surveillance camera routers.
- Replaced 36 lead acid batteries with lithium batteries for surveillance and LPR cameras.
- Updated the security inverter for ISS surveillance camera monitoring.
The camera project has been a success to date with neighbouring communities (Runciman, Goede Gift, Admirals Kloof) installing security/surveillance cameras all feeding into the Simon’s Town camera network, ensuring our area is as safe as possible.
We are currently investigating the feasibility of installing additional cameras to provide comprehensive coverage, as far as possible, of Simon’s Kloof’s four boundaries: to the east (St Barts), west (SA Navy), north (Runciman Drive), and south (SANParks).
